Visual Skills

Eye’s ability to quickly and accurately shift from one target to another is an important visual skill which allows us to accurately control where we aim our eyes. The ability to make efficient eye movement is especially important in reading. When the eyes are well trained, children will have the basic skills to read and comprehend and visualize. Visual training is the foundation skills needed for speed reading.

Remember to relax and make it fun for the children. You could play a relaxing music at the background while playing the visual games with your children.

Use finger puppets to train your children visual skills. Ask your children to watch the finger puppet, being careful to only move the eyes and not your head, while you move the finger puppets in the following ways:

1. Random: Move the finger puppets randomly, jumping around from one place to another and sometimes hiding it away from the children and appearing it again, repeatedly. You could ask your children to catch the finger puppet at the end of the exercise.

 2. Pursuits: Train the eyes to smoothly follow moving targets in pattern. (visual training pattern printable 1, 2 and 3). Start the exercise with slow speed and move the finger puppet faster for a more challenging exercise.

3. Line tracking: (visual training printable 4 and 5). Follow the lines with your eyes without getting lost. Remember to use your eyes and not finger.
